Code of Conduct

Like its parent organization, the ACA@UBC is strongly committed to diversity, equity, and the free expression of ideas as demonstrated by conduct based on a firm belief in the value of civil discourse and the free exploration of diverse ideas and concepts. In keeping with the ACA Code of Ethics, the Canadian Human Rights Act, and the Canadian Criminal Code, everyone has a right to perform professional activities free of discrimination and sexual or physical harassment.

All attendees, speakers, and volunteers at our conference are required to agree with the following Code of Conduct. Organizers will enforce this code throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe environment for everybody.

To provide all participants to its seminar and symposium–including attendees, speakers, volunteers, and students–the opportunity to benefit from the event, the ACA@UBC is committed to providing a harassment-free and bias-free environment for everyone, regardless of race; national, cultural, or ethnic origin; colour; religion; sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression; age; marital or family status; mental or physical disability; or past convictions for which a pardon has been granted. The Code of Conduct is based on a fundamental respect for the rights, dignity, and value of all persons. We recognize a shared responsibility to create and cultivate that environment for the benefit of all.  Some behaviours are, therefore, specifically prohibited:

  • Repeated comments, biases, harassment, or threats based on race; national, cultural, or ethnic origin; colour; religion; sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression; age; marital or family status; mental or physical disability; or past convictions for which a pardon has been granted.
  • Sexual harassment or intimidation, including unwelcome sexual attention, stalking (physical or virtual), or unsolicited physical contact.
  • Physical harassment or intimidation, including causing bodily harm to someone or attempting to destroy or destroying someone’s property (physical or virtual).
  • Following or verbally harassing someone (physical or virtual).
  • Harassing photography or recording.
  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events.

All participants are expected to observe these rules and behaviours in all conference venues, including online venues, and social events. Symposium and seminar participants seek to learn, network and have fun. Please do so responsibly and with respect for the right of others to do likewise. Participants asked to stop a hostile or harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
